International Students, CDCP, and Refugee Coverage

If you are an international student, your McMaster student dental plan is almost always your best coverage, and it works at our clinic. Most international students are not eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which is for residents who meet income and residency rules, so the student plan is the one to rely on.

If you are a student with refugee status, we also accept refugee coverage through IFHP for the services it covers, with direct billing. Whatever your situation, we will check what you are eligible for and explain your costs clearly before we begin.

This keeps the honest, accurate framing. Do not imply international students qualify for CDCP, because most do not, and do not overstate what IFHP covers.

After explaining my situation of loose upper right wisdom tooth that's swelling making it impossible to chew, she got me in for 8:30. Drove in before 8:30, did some minimal paper work and had my tooth extracted and left before 9:00, as I had
my son to give a ride to work at 9.

How do I use my McMaster student dental insurance at the dentist?

It’s simple! Just bring your McMaster student ID when you visit. We handle all the insurance paperwork and file claims electronically with ACL/Studentcare (for undergrads) or Sun Life (for grad students). The insurance pays their portion directly to us, and you only pay your co-payment at the appointment, no forms to fill out!

What is the Studentcare Dental Network, and do I need to use a specific dentist?

The Studentcare network offers additional 20-30% discounts on top of your regular coverage, potentially getting you 100% coverage for some treatments. However, you’re not required to use network dentists; your McMaster plan works at any licensed dentist in Canada. While we’re not a network provider, many students choose us for our convenient location and quality care.

Does the McMaster student dental plan cover braces or Invisalign?

Unfortunately, orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign are not covered by standard McMaster student plans. However, we offer student-friendly payment plans for Invisalign and occasionally run promotions. We also provide free consultations to discuss your options and help make orthodontic treatment affordable.

Can I opt out of the McMaster dental insurance plan?

Yes, you can opt out during the designated period (usually September, and January for winter students) if you have equivalent coverage elsewhere, like through a parent’s plan. You’ll need to provide proof of other insurance and submit an opt-out request online. Once opted out, you’ll get a refund but cannot use the McMaster plan for that year.

Are international students eligible for the new Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

Unfortunately, international students are generally not eligible for the CDCP as it’s primarily for Canadian citizens/residents without private insurance. As an international student at McMaster, you should rely on the university’s student dental plan, which already provides substantial coverage at any dentist.

Does Wilson East Dental offer any special discounts or deals for students?

While we cannot discount the insurance co-payment (as this isn’t permitted), we offer several student perks: free initial consultations for new patients, periodic promotions like free whitening kits, and flexible payment plans for larger treatments not fully covered by insurance. We also prioritize making dental care affordable and never let cost be a barrier to necessary treatment.

I'm graduating soon, can I still use the student dental plan after graduation?

Your McMaster student dental coverage typically lasts until August 31st of the academic year you paid for, even if you graduate in spring. This gives you a few months after graduation to use your remaining benefits. We recommend scheduling any needed treatments before your coverage expires, as you’ll need new insurance after graduation.

Where is Wilson East Dental Clinic and is it near McMaster University?

We’re located at 57 Wilson Street East in Ancaster, just 10-15 minutes from McMaster’s campus. We offer free on-site parking and are easily accessible by car or HSR transit. Our location provides a peaceful environment away from campus while still being convenient for students.

Can I use my student plan and my parent's insurance together?

Yes. If you are covered by both your McMaster student plan and a parent’s insurance, we can coordinate the two to reduce or even eliminate what you pay out of pocket. Bring both plan details and we will sort it out.
