What Is NIHB Dental Coverage and Who Is Eligible?
The Non-Insured Health Benefits program is a federal program that covers medically necessary dental care for eligible First Nations and Inuit patients. Coverage does not depend on your household income. It depends on your eligibility and the treatment you need.
How NIHB dental benefits work
NIHB pays for eligible dental services according to program criteria, frequency limits and, for some treatments, prior approval. There is no application process. If you meet the eligibility rules, you can use your benefits at any licensed dental provider in Canada.
Who may be eligible
- Individuals registered under the Indian Act
- Recognized Inuit beneficiaries
- Children under two whose parent qualifies
- Canadian residents who meet NIHB program rules
Bring your NIHB client information to your first visit and our team will check what you are covered for. Care is led by Dr. Kayvan Ghane, who treats children, adults and seniors.
What Does NIHB Cover for Dental Care?

Root Canal Treatment
Standard root canal treatment on eligible front teeth, premolars and first or second molars can usually be submitted without prior approval. Retreatment, apicoectomy and root canals on wisdom teeth need predetermination. The tooth must be restorable and have a reasonable long term outlook.
Dental Crowns
A crown may be covered when the tooth is restorable, decay and gum disease are under control, and the treatment meets NIHB criteria. Predetermination is required. Crowns placed only to improve appearance are not covered.
Full and Partial Dentures
NIHB may cover complete dentures, acrylic and cast partial dentures, immediate dentures, repairs, relines and rebases. Coverage depends on your treatment history and frequency limits. An initial partial denture needs predetermination. Implant supported dentures are not covered.
Braces and Invisalign
NIHB does not cover braces or Invisalign for mild crowding or appearance. Orthodontic treatment may be considered for a severe bite problem that affects function. Predetermination is always required, and adult coverage is more limited.

NIHB Dental Predetermination: When Prior Approval Is Needed
Predetermination means NIHB reviews your treatment plan, X-rays and clinical notes before treatment begins, then confirms what it will cover. Our team prepares and submits this for you.
Treatments that usually need approval
- Eligible dental crowns
- Major oral surgery
- Orthodontic treatment
- Initial and some replacement dentures
- Additional periodontal treatment
- Services beyond standard frequency limits
- Root canal retreatment and apicoectomy
- Sedation and general anaesthesia
Approval is not guaranteed. NIHB assesses every request against its own criteria, your documentation and your treatment history.

We have had such an amazing experience with this dental office. Everyone is so kind, welcoming, patient, and genuinely caring. They have gone above and beyond to make sure both my family and I feel comfortable and supported. Our daughter has recently had some issues along the way, and the entire team has been nothing but understanding, compassionate, and amazing with her. They have always taken the time to listen, explain things, and make sure she feels safe and comfortable. It means so much as a parent to have a dental team that treats your child with such patience and kindness. We are so grateful to have found such an incredible dental office. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a dentist who truly cares about their patients! Thank you Dr Ghane and Team! ❤️🦷Posted on Google![]()

This morning I called 8:20, was greeted by office manager. After explaining my situation of loose upper right wisdom tooth that's swelling making it impossible to chew, she got me in for 8:30. Drove in before 8:30, did some minimal paper work and had my tooth extracted and left before 9:00, as I had my son to give a ride to work at 9. I recommend this Wilson East dental office highly. Hello Dr. Ghane, I just wanted to express my sincere thanks to you and your staff for the excellent care you provided this morning. It was very kind of you all, and I was truly impressed by how efficiently and professionally everyone worked together to remove my upper right wisdom tooth. The teamwork, organization, and compassion shown throughout the procedure were remarkable and greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your prompt attention and outstanding service. I am very grateful for the care I received. I also appreciated the reminder to renew my dental coverage, which has now been completed. Thank you for the thorough aftercare instructions as well. I'm pleased to report that there were no issues with bleeding or any other complications, and my recovery has been progressing well. Sincerely, PaulPosted on Google![]()
